The travel and tourism industry in South Africa performed well in the recent past. In 2007 the country broke the 7 million mark in foreign arrivals while more than half a million people are involved in direct job opportunities in the South African tourism industry (Haarhoff, 2007:3). According to a National Tourism and Sports Skills Audit (2007) the same cannot be said for the skills development in the tourism industry.
