According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in 2022, German travelers took 222 million trips - both for business and personal reasons - that involved at least one overnight stay, either within Germany or abroad. This figure represents a 24% increase from 2021, which was substantially impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the number of trips taken was still 15% lower than in 2019 before the crisis. In particular, the number of trips taken abroad significantly increased, with 87 million in 2022 - a 78% increase from the previous year.

Upon closer examination of travel patterns, it was discovered that in 2022, there were approximately 192 million private trips. This represents a 22% increase from 2021 but a 13% decrease from pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Conversely, business trips rose significantly more in 2022, with a 39% increase to 30 million. However, business travel remained 27% lower in 2022 than at pre-pandemic levels. This indicates that virtual meetings may replace in-person business travel even after the pandemic.
