CAMBODIA’S TOURISM BENEFITS FROM CHINESE VISITORS

Cambodia ‘s tourism authorities reported 4.3 million tourists coming to the country between January and September, which represents an increase of 11.8% compared to the same period last year.

China continues to top the list of the largest source markets by nationality during the nine-month period, with 1.4 million Chinese visiting the Kingdom. It is a substantial increase of 71%, according to the latest report from the Cambodia’s tourism ministry.

Last year, 5.6 million international tourists visited Cambodia, including 1.2 million people from China.

In contrast, visitors from neighboring countries, Vietnam (984,000 visitors), Laos (984,000) and Thailand (239,000) decreased in numbers, the report says. Tourists from South Korea, the fifth largest group of visitors, decreased by 13% from 296,500 in 2017 to only 223,000 this year.

The top ten source markets for Cambodia’s tourism are as follows - China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, South Korea, the United States, Japan, Malaysia, France and the United Kingdom. Altogether they amounted to 3.8 million visitors.

The Cambodian government has set itself the target of attracting 6.2 million foreign tourists this year. The Ministry of Tourism has stated that the country is on track to achieve such a goal.
