In 2015, the camping industry in Switzerland did not benefit from the record summer. 410 Swiss campsites, that operated in the country, recorded 2.6 million overnight stays last year, which is 15,000 fewer than in the previous year.

In 2009, there were 423 campsites offering their services in Switzerland and they recorded 3.6 million overnight stays.

However, because of the exchange rate changes, in recent years there was a sharp decline in guests from the neighboring countries, explained Erwin Oberascher, Operator of the Austrian travel portal Camping.info.

"The proportion of domestic guests at Swiss campsites is increasing every year and already represents 71 percent while in 2014 it was 64 percent. The most important groups of foreign guests are Germans with 13 per cent (16 percent in 2014) and Dutch with 7 per cent (11 percent in 2014)," said Mr. Oberascher.

Most popular regions for camping holidays are Canton Ticino (617,000 overnight stays), followed by Valais (362,000 overnight stays), and the Lake Geneva region (306,000 overnight stays).

Some Swiss campsites were able to attract more guests – Lake Geneva reported + 22 percent more overnight stays and Zurich campsites reported + 14 percent overnight stays. The combination of holidays on the beach and city tours was especially popular among the campers thanks to the last year's hot summer.

As to the most popular Swiss campsites, Camping Hüttenberg from Eschenz was elected as the favorite campsite on the Camping.info portal.
