Cleanliness is one of the biggest imperative in the hotel industry. Not all countries however can match their standards with the customers’ expectations. Slovakian hotels are the cleanest in Europe and receive the best scores, as shown in a report by Hotel.de.

While some countries do not exactly have the greatest reputation when it comes to cleanliness of hotel rooms, others are known to provide only the best services. A recent study by the booking platform Hotel.de examined more than two million ratings of hotels by international hotel guests.

Overnight guests evaluated the hotel booked via Hotel.de website after departure, using a points system (0 to 10). According to the results, Slovakia’s hotel owners are especially good at keeping the hotel rooms nice and clean. With a score of 8.75 points, Slovakian hotels are Europe’s leader regarding cleanliness. According to customer ratings, Bulgaria makes the second place with 8.70 points.

Great news for the Swiss hotel industry, which had been in a rough spot due to the Franc-shock and two-digit decreases in overnight stays – when it comes to cleanliness, customers award Swiss hotels with 8.66 points, which make it Europe’s third-best country. While holidays in the Alp region have become 20% more expensive for Europeans due to appreciation of the Franc, Switzerland’s hotel industry does its best to win back guests with increasingly better service.

Germany’s hotel industry was able to up its rank to 7th place with 8.53 points, only falling shortly behind Croatia (8.54) and lying level with Portugal (8.53).

Contrary to that, Scandinavian hotels seem to be a bit more “laid back”. Especially in Denmark, customers seem to be less content with the cleanliness of their rooms and only rate their hotels with 7.73 points in this regard.

With 7.92 points, Norway’s hotels present themselves a little better, while still reaching the lower ranks.  According to customer ratings, the research also showed that hotels in Great Britain (7.95) seem to not care very much about hygiene either.
