Land based tourism is the main problem

I lived in Galapagos for 4 years. Ship based tourism has remained flat (apx. 80,000 passengers / year) for the past 20 years or so. It has actually gone down slightly in the past 5 years.

Land based tourism has gone up from about 5,000 people per year to about 180,000 people per year in that same period. Sadly, while the government controls ship based tourism, it is not controlling land based tourism.
