AUSTRIAN TOURISM REPORTED MORE OVERNIGHT STAYS AGAIN

Statistics Austria has reported that tourism in Austria had a successful start to the season in May and continued to grow in June. There were over 12 million overnight stays, which is a 3.4% increase compared to the same time last year. Austria's holiday demand is driven by foreign tourists, accounting for 70% of the total demand. Meanwhile, overnight stays by domestic guests have returned to pre-COVID levels.

Nearly 70% of all overnight stays in June 2023 were by international visitors

During June 2023, the number of foreign guests who stayed overnight in Austria increased by 6.9% to 8.48 million. Domestic guests decreased by 3.4% to 3.92 million. Overall, Austrian accommodation establishments received 4.16 million guest arrivals, representing a 7.1% increase from the same month last year. When looking at guests' countries of origin, overnight stays by guests from Germany decreased by 2.4%, while Dutch guests increased their overnight stays in Austria by 16.5% compared to the previous year. In total, 20.68 million overnight stays were reported during summer 2023 (May and June), with foreign guests accounting for 13.62 million and domestic guests accounting for 7.06 million overnight stays.

High increase in overnight stays in the first half of 2023

Between January to June of 2023 data, 74.33 million recorded overnight stays. This is an increase of 11.78 million (18.8%) from the same period last year. This means that the number of overnight stays for the first half of 2023 was slightly lower than in 2019, where 76.35 million were recorded in the same time frame.
