There are more Airbnbs than hotels

Yet, according to figures from the Tourism Observatory, Galapagos will welcome around 300 visitors this year. That's almost double the number we saw back in 2007. The "why" behind this situation? Well, it isn't difficult to figure out. New types of tourism—Airbnb is a prime example—are changing things. Airbnb basically allows almost anyone to become a host, bypassing traditional hotels. This increases bed availability while, simultaneously, reducing costs. And naturally, tourists benefit, enjoying more options and lower prices. As the New York Times reported, residents of the Galapagos have been offering rooms for as little as $8 per night since the pandemic, while you might find entire apartments renting for just a little over $100.
