The popularity of camping destinations is growing in Germany: one in four people aged 16 and over (25 percent) now belongs to the camping target group, with around 17 million Germans. Compared to the previous survey last year, their share has increased by 4 percentage points.
The share of campers has grown particularly among the 16 to 39 age group: in three years the number has practically doubled: from 35 to 39 percent. In the age group of 40 to 59 it is 26 percent, which is significantly higher than in the over-60s segment, which has remained constant at 11 percent.
Motorhome, Campervan or Mini-camper
Almost half (49 percent) of all campers go on holiday with a motorhome, campervan or mini-camper. 18 percent book a mobile home, 17 percent a tent or rooftop tent and 16 percent a caravan. Traditional campsites remain the most popular holiday type in Germany: four out of five campers use them for their main trip.
In addition, alternative campsites and pitches are becoming more and more important: 29 percent of tourists have stayed in so-called micro-camping options such as on farms, vineyards or private property. Another 56 percent would be willing to try it within the next two years. Thus, the demand for natural and individual overnight stays is constantly increasing.
Germany Is Still the Most Popular Camping Destination
With a share of around 54 percent, Germany is still the main travel destination for campers, ahead of other European countries with around 41 percent. Within Germany, the two federal states of Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania rank top among camping destinations, closely followed by Schleswig-Holstein. Ahead of the other European countries are still Italy, followed by France and the Netherlands.
Compared to last year, the camping budget has slightly increased: on average, campers have a total of 910 euros per adult or teenager and 410 euros per child (under 14 years) per week at their disposal. This corresponds to 102 euros per adult per day (2023: 90 euros) and 54 euros per child (2023: 53 euros).
