Breaking records, Vienna closed 2025 as its top tourism performer yet. For the first time ever, the city counted more than 20 million overnight stays. Business travel fueled much of this rise, especially conferences drawing large crowds. Congress tourism alone boosted economic inflows by several billion euros. Growth was felt widely, supporting both urban services and broader national markets.

Vienna authorities introduced the 2025 financial overview. Numbers back up what many suspected: Vienna stands tall among Europe’s top spots for holidaymakers and professionals alike. Looking ahead, big gatherings have secured space on the calendar far beyond this decade.

Congress Tourism Hits Record Levels

Overnight stays by event attendees passed two million for the first time. In 2025, the count of conferences and business gatherings reached 7,196 - up 9 percent compared to the prior year. Attendance climbed to 794,812 people, 19 percent higher than before. That rise led to 2.54 million overnight stays, an increase of 27 percent.

One out of eight overnight visits to Vienna ties back to conferences or meetings. With such events comes notable financial benefit - output reached €1.707 billion, marking a peak level so far. Tax collections totaled €348 million within this sum. From those taxes, the national administration received €223 million. Regional and local authorities combined gained €125 million. Funds directed straight to Vienna amounted to €39 million. In addition, tourism in the city no longer has seasonal lows, securing 19,300 year-round jobs.

Congress Shapes Most Outcomes

Though corporate events were more numerous than scientific gatherings - 4,582 compared to 2,614 - the impact of the latter was much larger. These large meetings made up roughly 1.7 million overnight stays, which is about two out of every three in the sector. Their contribution also represented close to 65 percent of overall value generated, totaling €1.003 billion.

Among fields drawing attendees to conferences, human medicine led at nearly half of participation. Next came natural sciences, accounting for just under one eighth. Humanities followed, representing a tenth of attendance figures across gatherings. Technology-related meetings made up 7%, matching the portion tied to United Nations headquarters activities. In corporate assemblies, sectors like banking and finance stood out alongside general business topics, combining for a total near two fifths. The tech industry again appeared further down the list, contributing about one fifth. Health care conventions within company-led programs reached close to one sixth. Growth in overnight visits linked to these types of events rose sharply - crossing more than three fifths during the measured period.

High-Spending, Loyal Visitors

Spending by meeting attendees gives the local economy a notable boost. A WIFO analysis shows these travelers open their wallets wider than standard tourists. While ordinary visitors stay about 2.34 nights and spend around €380, conference guests remain much longer - averaging 4.4 nights - with expenses reaching €560 each trip. This extended presence often means deeper engagement with city services. Their economic footprint stands out clearly when measured against leisure tourism averages.

  • 89% come from abroad (63% Europe, 15% Asia, 9% USA).
  • 27% travel with a companion, further boosting local spending.
  • 90% say they would like to return to Vienna, and 93% would recommend the city to others.

Experts highlight the strategic importance of the congress tourism: Meeting and event guests spend significantly more money in the city than other tourists. They are also ambassadors for Vienna. Almost all meeting guests want to visit Vienna again.

Positive Future Prospects

Even now, the pace continues without pause. By 2026, close to 60 large-scale gatherings - each drawing more than a thousand attendees - are set to take place, among them four anticipated to draw crowds beyond ten thousand. Leading the charge at the Vienna Convention Bureau, Anita Paic observes how global competition grows sharper by the year, but points out that Vienna has already locked in roughly 100 global conferences and business assemblies, totaling near 125,000 guests through 2031. Meanwhile, proposals for over three hundred further events remain under discussion, stretching bookings forward into 2038.

Years ahead look promising, thanks to a surge in visitors and consistent financial gains. A full schedule beyond 2025 underlines Vienna's growing appeal for vacation travel alongside major corporate events. Because it mixes old-world character with up-to-date facilities and research strength, results keep improving. Gains seen now stem directly from choices made long ago. Future benefits appear likely, given current trends.
