The Romanian government recently announced its plans to invest 25 million euro in the construction of two harbors and the creation of a beach in the Danube Delta in order to give tourism in the area a boost.

Two ports – one in Murighiol and another in Sfântu Gheorghe, both located in the delta’s Tulcea district are to be constructed at the cost of 20 million euro, city council president Victor Tarhon told the Balkans.com business news website.

Another five million will be spent on the creation of a beach in the in the town of Sulina, Tarhon said in a statement. Currently the town – which is located on the Black Sea coast, is deprived of tourists because there is no road access to it and because it has been transformed in a navigable channel for commercial ships. Both projects will start this year and be completed within 1.5 years.

The Danube Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and large parts of it are protected, as it houses unique plant and animal species. It lies on the Via Pontiki, the pan-European route of migrating birds which starts in Northern Europe, passes by the Ukraine’s Black Sea shore and continues all the way down into Turkey. The Danube Delta’s wetlands are crucial for migratory bird flocks, which include a number of rare and endangered species, such as the Pygmy Cormorant.
